Did you know that the Crockett County Museum used to be a hospital?  Well, it did, and on March 28, we met one of the last patients in the building…her sister Susan share’s their story, enjoy!

West Texas museum history picture “When we first moved to Ozona, every year the First Baptist Church gave a dinner for the new teachers.  In Sept. 1956, the dinner was just beginning and Dr. Ralph Simon was preparing to play his violin.  He got a call and had to leave to go deliver Peggy.  She and Mama were the last patients in the old hospital that is now the museum.  Most of the furnishings, etc. for the hospital had been moved out and much of the furnishings for the sheriff’s dept. had been moved in.  My daddy used to love to tell people that my sister was born in the sheriff’s office.

My sister was born Peggy Ruth Black on September 10, 1956 to Ona Faye and Walter Joe Black.  My daddy was a teacher in Ozona from 1955 to 1965 and taught primarily 7th grade English.  He also taught some high school history for a year or two.  He also drove the bus after school and for the band for football games, worked selling tickets for football games, worked the clock at basketball games, ran the South Pool in the summers, and was President of the Little League in the 1960’s.  Mama worked for a few years in the cafeteria at South Elementary School in the 1960’s.”
